Hi My real name is John Schirra, I live in Walnut, a suburb of Los Angles. I’ve loved flight sims since Jet came out for the PC in ‘85 or so. When I’m not flying online, I’m usually working. I am a partner of Kocher & Schirra, a 25 person eletrical consulting firm which designs building and facility electrical power systems. I got my engineering degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in ‘75. Thats where I got my handle of Captain Crunch. I would use the name Crunch when playing an antiquated game of Star Trek on an old IBM 360 computer that had been rigged with multi-user on-line terminals. I married (once), have two children (Rachel and Daniel), enjoy deep sea fishing, snow skiing and scuba diving. All of the flight sims I’ve played over the years got me interested in flying for real. I received my glider pilot license (sailplanes, not hang gliders) in 2000 and fly whenever I have time and the weather permits. I love the challenge of staying aloft without the aid of a motor. My personal bests are a nearly three hour flight and an altitude gain of 7,500 feet. And, no, it doesn’t take wind to keep a sailplane up in the air. I started playing AW about October ‘96 and have been with the DoW since April ‘97. It’s a great group to fly with. I have learned to like AH since the demise of AW. It definitely adds some new dimensions to the game. See ya in the air.
